2. William SERGISON (Henry1) was born in 1816-1820 in Gilford, , Down, Northern Ireland, died on November 30, 1872 in Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada1 aged 56, and was buried in Paisley Cemetery, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

William Sergison operated the British Hotel in Paisley since 1857. The 1861 Census lists the building as a one story log structure on a 1/2 acre worth $2000. The tavern stock consisted of 40 barrels of whiskey and brandy worth $750. The 1867 Business Directory has an advertisement for the British Hotel which notes "This house has every accommodation for travellers, a good driving house and stabling for seventy horses."

This "wayside tavern", located on the site of the old creamery, also severed another interesting purpose in its early years as noted in the following report.
On a cold wintry day William Sergison called at the home of Deacon MacPhee, begging him to spare him some hay for his starving horse - "Old Charlie". Mr. MacPhee had no hay to spare, but did not wish to refuse the "Tavern Keeper", as he called him, for the feed for his poorly nourished horse. He also refused payment for the feed. So Mr. Sergison, knowing this fledgling Baptist congregation was looking for a place in the village to hold their services, offered him the use of a hall over the inn to hold their meetings. He also agreed to furnish the tallow candles for lights - all free of charge. The Baptists accepted his offer, and for a short time, they held their services at this location. Later, they held services in the drill shed, located west of where the United Church stands today. All this time, Rev. Sinclair walked the nine miles, from Burgoyne, many times over bad roads, to keep Paisley open for the Baptists.
