Nelles was President and Managing Director of the Randolph Hotel Co. which operates the British American and LaSalle Hotel in Kingston. The Hotel LaSalle was one of the finest hotels between Toronto and Montreal. It had 132 rooms, a large banquet hall and many other facilities which place it as an A1 modern hotel.
The British American has had a very colorful history, starting back in 1807 when it was a popular stop-over point for the theatrical society of the 1880's. There are 55 guest rooms which are served by a most impressive dining room which seats 90. The beverage rooms at the British American patterned on the "Club" style are panelled in knotty pine.
In addition to being a good hotelman, Nelles owned and operated the Kingston Ponies professional baseball club in the class C Border league. Was a member of city council for a number of years, President of the Junior "B" O.H.A. Hockey club, vice-president of the local Rod & Gun club and took an active part in the interests and welfare of the community. There is a Megaffin stadium in Kingston named in his honour.
