October 29th, 1944 was a sad day for the hotel industry in Ontario. For it was then that the trade lost one of its more romantic personalities and a pioneer on the industry's development, in the passing of the late Major D. W. Mcgaffin. The Major's life was a full one. Some 45 years ago he started in the hotel business in Toronto, where he remained for two years. During this period he grasped the ways of hotel operation, at a time when business was a very competitive one.
The first Great War then came along and the Major served overseas for nearly five years from 1914-1918 as a member of the famous 4th Battalion in Canada, Britain and France. He was discharged on December 18, 1918 with the rank of Major. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War medal and Victory medals. During the war he saved the live of Chief Brant of the Six Nations Indian Band of Brantford. During the late thirties he was honoured by the Six Nations by being invested as an "Honourary Chief" at their Brantford reserve. Thereafter he was always receiving wonderful gifts regularly from the tribe, such as war bonnets, beaded canes, carvings, decorated canoe paddles.
On his return to Canada he acted as an official of the Soldiers Civil Re-establishment and when this job was completed, he ventured into the industrial field for three years. However, a longing for his original business proved too strong and he returned to the hotel industry where he remained till his passing.
He was one of the first to open with the advent of beer by the glass in 1934, made a career for himself and was known throughout the province having served as a member of the Provincial and a director of the Toronto Hotel Association for many years. He was also well known as a sportsman and as a promoter of community baseball and hockey. In his more leisurely moments he enjoyed his fishing trips and deer hunting.
During the first six months of World War II he was officer in charge of Garrison Sports and Recreation at the CNE grounds.
The GERRARD Hotel was situated at the corner of Gerrard & Parliament in the old Cabbage Town section of Toronot.

MAN IS TRAMPLED TO DEATH WHILE HARNESSING HORSE
ARTHUR BELL FATALLY INJURED ON ROSS AVENUE DIES WITHIN HOUR OF BEING HURT
Knocked down and trampled upon by a horse which he attempted to harness. Arthur Bell, a recent arrival from Morris, Manitoba was fatally injured about one o'clock yesterday afternoon and an hour later succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of Dr. Wadge to save his life.
Bell had gone to the stables in the rear of 774 Ross Avenue to hitch up a horse belonging to Robert Moffat. Some time after he had gone from that address to the stable he was seen by William Patterson lying on the ground apparently in great pain. Mr. Patterson notified a Mr. McPhain and the two carried the injured man into 763 Ross Avenue where he was attended by Dr. Wadge who had been summoned. Bell appeared to be in a little pain and in fact was almost unconscious when the Doctor arrived. He died a short time afterwards, only speaking a few words, giving his name and address. The horse had trampled upon Bell's abdomen inflicting internal injuries.
Bell had been residing with his wife and two small children with his brother-in-law William Squires at 424 Ross Avenue and had been in the city about two weeks. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of Kerr, Bawlf and McNamee and the coroner was notified. It is not likely that an inquest will be held. There were no witnesses to the accident and until Mr. Patterson happened to look out the rear of his house and saw the injured man lying on the snow, no one was aware of the incident.
The funeral took place at Morris on Thursday, January 31st. Rev. Geo. Bennett performing the last sad rites. He is buried in the Morris Cemetery.
