ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA , 1960, Vol. 2, page 494 : Richard (1313-1376)..obtained his father's earldom and land in 1331 (5 years after his father's execution), led one of the divisions of the English army at Crecy and took part in the siege of Calais; he also fought in the naval battle with the Spaniards off Winchelsea in Aug 1350. He was one of the regents of England in 1335 and died January 24, 1376, leaving three sons, the youngest of whom Thomas, became archbishop of Canterbury.
