William was educated at Oxford, and was a friend of Sir Roundell Palmer, who afterwards became Lord Selburne, and studied with him under his father, Rev. W. J. Palmer, Vicar of Mixbury. His dau., Jane P., has several letters written to her father by the late Lord Selburne, whom her father visited on his trips to England. The late William Tolton, Jr., m. Hannah Parkinson in 1832, who d. in 1887, age 76 years. Issue: Mrs. Charles McDougall (d.), Joseph, Thomas, Jr., William P., George P., Edward, John P., Mrs. Daniel McMillan, Jane P., Ellen (d.), Benjamin, David, Andrew, d. Sept. 23 1898; and Mrs. Lewis Armstrong (d.). Of this branch: Joseph went to the U.S., where he was Captain in the 4th Mich. Cavalry in the Civil War, and participated in seventeen engagements. George came to Canada with his parents in 1830, and was practically raised in Guelph Tp. In 1848 he visited England, and spent the summer there. In 1851 he left the farm and came to Guelph, where he kept a grocery for some years, and then became a grain buyer, which occupation he continued until his death in 1906. He was a man of strict integrity, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of a large acquaintance. He was a member of the English church, and in politics a Conservative.
