Obituary for Hugh STURDY
There passed away last week one of the oldest settlers in this tract. Hugh Sturdy, at the advanced age of 84 years. He came to Canada in 1830 and after spending two years inToronto settled upon the homestead in Goderich township, where he has ever since resided. Here by years of diligent industry, he made himself a comfortable home, built the old stone house which is one of the land-marks on the Huron road and was able and willing to extend a helping hand to many who came in later. To him and to his wife whom he survived by 11 years, were given a large family of sons and daughters among whom we may mention Mrs. (Ann) John Kernighan of Colborne township, Mrs. (Margaret) Williame E. Johnston of Goderich, Mrs. (Helen) William Proctor of Sarnia, Thomas Sturdy now we believe chief of police in Emerson and two other sons, Samuel and Hugh, who continue to represent the family on the old place. Mr. Study was highly respected as a straight forward, upright, downright Man, a warm friend and a kind neighbor, an attached and steadfast adherent of the Church of England, he was faithful in attendance on her services to the very last, even in the days of failing powers and great debility. His iron like constitution long repelled the age. Until the last year he never had a day's illness. Bu of late weakness of the heart accompanied by dropsical symptoms oppressed him, and after a week of acute suffering he passed away on the 30th ult: and , after appropriate religious services at the house was interred in Goderich Cemetery whither a very large concourse of relatives, friends and neighbors accompanied his remains.
NOTE: Most 0n-line researchers have Hugh STURDY, born 1800, as the son of Richard STURDY, born 1789 , and Sarah FINDLEY. Possibly because of the Frederick STURDY 1948 Historical sketch. This seems highly unlikely due to the age difference.
One researcher, Jerry England, has HUGH as the son od John STURDY, a brother to Richard.
A circumstantial bit of evidence that supports this is the normal naming convention that Hugh's 1st born was named John but there is no known son named Richard.
