First Generation 
1. Sgt. Joseph STANZAL was born about 1784 in , , Alsace-Lorraine, France1,2 and died on February 9, 1884 in , Carleton Co, Ontario, Canada2 aged about 100.

I am not yet certain of Josephs birthday or place of birth but there are two references to his age. In Beldens Historical Atlas for Carleton County, dated 1879 it refers to Joseph as being 100 years of age. So his birthday is about 1775-1780. Joseph is also mentioned in Walkers Carleton Saga page 495.
From pay records Joseph "Resigned from Bugleman" 24 Nov 1817, at Gibralter and was paid 15s-6d for 30 days til 24 Dec. Last name spelled Stentzel with First name Conrad?? Next at Albany Barracks paid L1-10s for service from 25 Jun - 24 Jul 1818. Next at Quebec paid L2-6d for service from 5 Oct to 24 Dec 1818, (81 days) WO12/ 6946.The spelling of the last name is the same but first name is now Joseph. I am at this time assuming that Conrad and Joseph are the same person because neither appears at the same time and the listing of the names appears on different pay sheets in the same place adjacent to the same names/people. Also on this pay sheet a note appears against most soldiers names "From 5th Battalion"
Discharged in Canada on 17 May 1819. Pay from 25 Mar to 17 May (54 days) L1-7s. From 18 May to 17 Jun 1819 (31 days) paid L1-1s-1.5d. Joseph was attached to 2nd Riffle Battalion of 60th Reg. Col. N.C. Burton Commanding. About this time 2nd Batt. became the 1st Batt. So Sgt Joseph came to Canada between 24 Jul and 5 Oct 1818 and according to Walkers Carleton Saga Joseph went directly to the Richmond Military Settlement and took up his land on Con 9 E1/2 L3.Twp of Goulbourn. From Land Book "l" page 531 Joseph Stanzell was a private in 60th Reg. of Foot and completed the perscribed terms of settlement on 5 June 1822.
Joseph married Sarah Gale COYLE about 1816 in Belfast, Antrim Co, Ulster, Ireland. Sarah was born in 1800 in Belfast, Antrim Co, Ulster, Ireland2 and died on February 11, 1835 in , Carleton Co, Ontario, Canada2 aged 35.
