T. T. LUSCOMBE, 74, CARTHAGE EX-MAYOR SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Discoverer of Famous Tripoli Mines Leaves Big Fortune, It is Said -- Funeral Today
_______
Thomas T. Luscombe, former mayor of Carthage, died at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at the Carthage Hospital where he had been several months taking treatment. He suffered from a general breakdown due to old age. He was 74 years old.
In the death of Mr. Luscombe Carthage has lost another early settler whose life was closely identified with the growth and development of southwest Missouri. He came to this country in 1870, settling in Seneca, where he discovered the deposits of Tripoli, the development of which he considered his most important work.
In 1877 he moved to Carthage, where for seven years he was engaged in the dry goods business, first alone, and later in partnership with C. F. McElroy.
In 1884 he established the Eagle Mills which manufactured kiln-dried corn meal hominy and grits. This was a new industry, there being only two similar establishments in the state.
Having abandoned the working of his Tripoli mines when he moved to Carthage he resumed that business in 1887, turning his attention to invention, devising manufacturing machinery for handling it and discovering new uses for it. The product of the American Tripoli company thus gained a world wide celebrity, bringing Mr. Luscombe into fame as "the father of that industry."
During recent years Mr. Luscombe had devoted little attention to these interests, but had been busied with his extensive mining investments in Jasper county. He had large holdings in mining property throughout the district and is said to have left a large estate.
Mr. Luscombe was one of the chief promoters of the town of Crane, where he was one of the largest property owners and did much for the up-building of the place.
Mr. Luscombe served Carthage in many public capacities. He was mayor when the first street railway franchise of Carthage was signed and the present fire department building was erected; president of the school board for three terms; president of the old board of trade and later of the Carthage Commercial club.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and both a Knight Templar and a Shriner.
Mrs. Luscombe, to whom he was married in Carrollton, April 20, 1870, passed away October 12, 1905. A son, Tom, met a tragic death in a railway accident in August 1914.
He is survived by a son and four daughters. They are: Carl Luscombe, Mrs. B.K. Blair of Joplin, Mrs. W.B. Post, Miss Maude Luscombe of Carthage, Mrs. F.E. Atwood of Carrolltown, Missouri.
Out of respect to the fact that Mr. Luscombe was mayor of the city at one time, Mayor Gammon and a committee from the city council attended the services in a body.
The pallbearers who were all Knights Templar, were: C.F. Drake, M.S. Stutzman, W.H. Shepard, Willis Wallingford, R.C. Jarrell, G.A. Rose
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral are: Mrs. Agnes Throop, T.W. Orchard, Mr. & Mrs. F.E. Atwood of Carrolltown, Robert Orchard of Independence, Kansas, Miss Maude Luscombe, who is ill at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis and was not able to attend, and an aunt, Miss Annie Orchard, has gone to be with her at this time.
