Mourning the Loss of a Dear Friend - By Josée Bonhomme
It was a sad day in March when we heard Clive Nicholson had passed away peacefully in Ontario, from complications from a longstanding pulmonary condition. For many of us, he had been a mentor, an example, and a friend with a mean arsenal of jovial stories.
Clive was born in a rural area near Paisley, Ontario on January 17, 1932, grew up to be a heavy duty mechanic and welder extraordinaire, not to mention having a flair for prospecting and a definite attraction for gold.
He came to the Klondike for adventure, as a true pioneer in the late 50's. Clive logged for firewood, barged his logs to town, or drove them in on a 5-ton truck from the Dempster, and he worked hard at that. But that wasn't enough. Clive worked for the Yukon Highways Department
in the summers, built the third version of Flat Ck Hill on the Klondike Highway, and even the Dome Road looking for good gravel.
Jack Fraser remembers working with Clive, and buying firewood from him: "You knew you always got a full cord with Clive, and he could design and build a road like it was nobody's business."
Rob Nicholson, his son, describes him as a man who did things "his own way"… for which we are thankful, for the tricks he taught us, and his glowing originality.
Engaged on Dredge No. 4 by Y.C.G.C. having done steam-pointing and general labour around the behemoths, Clive had respect for heavy work and complicated things. He cut ditches the old fashion way high up on the mountaintops to convey water to unlikely places. He did it all, and loved his Yukon home.
When the dredges went out of business and ground came open, Clive saw the future in 3-D. He stuck around and staked some good open ground. He raised his kids as miners in the sixties and seventies, set them up on Sourdough Hill, but always had his eye on Lovett Gulch, as the perspicacious prospector he was.
There he made a small or large fortune by anyone's standard. Through hard work, honesty and talent, Clive made a difficult property pay, and pay it did.
He understood nature and all its complicated relationships. He was instrumental in creating the Klondike Placer Miners' Association. He wanted people to come together and run the industry to its potential.
We will miss our friend and mentor, our inspiration and all the answers to the difficult questions. The ditches you built, the roads you built and the systems you created will keep our inspiration going for many centuries to come. Thanks, Clive, we will miss you tremendously.
See you in the next gold field!
To a true pioneer, a gentleman and a miner, so long friend, may we only be good at one of your many talents, and that is the gift of inspiration you leave in our memories…
From the Klondike Sun, May 05, 2010.
