George Norman MacDonald grew up in Southampton, Ontario, Canada, and worked as a fisherman in Alpena, Michigan before starting his sailing career as a deckhand. His "steamboats" worked on the Great Lakes of North America hauling iron ore and other cargoes for the steel industry. In the off season, he made his home with his wife Margaret and their children in Toledo, Ohio.
