From; Recollextions by Robert M. Smith, March 29, 2013

Mr M.L. Gregg whose given names were " Mervyn Lloyd " ( hence at times M.L.) ,was always known by everyone as "Tory" . He was born in Brant Township located in Bruce County in 1906 . Early in life he followed his passion for ice hockey, playing first for local teams in the town of Paisley and then his travels took him much farther afield as he enjoyed an 8 year career in semi-pro hockey circles .His stops included Windsor,Pittsburgh Pa. and London Ont . beginning around 1929 .It had to have been quite a journey in those days .

Once his hockey career was behind him, he returned to his Bruce County roots and accepted a job as a sportscaster at the Wingham Ont. station CKNX . He remained at this job for many years ,combining it with another "love", that of calling harness races .His busy schedule took him to virtually every small "bull ring" in Southwestern Ontario to call the races . Many of his engagements were as part of the team assembled by long time starting gate operator Tom McDonnell of Hamilton .

Gregg's folksy and homespun style of calling races became his trademark as fans invariably loved his calls wherever he went . In those days the PA systems were not always top notch but he made the best of what he was dealt . The announcer's job somehow went beyond just calling post parades ,the race itself and the outcome . His job often included asking people to move a car ,find a wayward child or make a community announcement such as birth or a death connected with the sport .

When Thorncliffe Park in Toronto opened in 1950, the management asked Gregg to do the race calls .After a short stint in the Metropolitan area he had to give up the job due to the travel involved .He soon moved back to doing the small spots where everyone knew him . I think he may have done some fill in duties when London's Western Fair Raceway opened under the lights in 1961 . Even in the off season, Mr. Gregg was often called upon to act as MC at banquets held by local Turf Clubs .

As small town harness racing waned with the changing times ,Gregg's services were less and less in demand .Aware of his following and stature within the sport's world ,Molson's Breweries hired him to do promotional work with the title of District Sales Manager . He travelled about making appearances and presenting trophies and other awards .Many of his assignments involved the sport of harness racing ,where he was able to meet up with old friends .

Tory Gregg left presents a trophy to driver Walter Weese of Dresden in recognition of his top U.D.R.S. standing at the 1971 spring meeting at Windsor Raceway .The presentation was on behalf of Molson's Brewery

Through his many years of doing the sport's broadcasts at CKNX in Wingham there was scarcely a person in certain areas of rural Ontario who did know who Tory Gregg was .In those days ,many people did not have televisions yet and radio was their main source of receiving information and entertainment .Folks listened in their parlours, their cars and even while they milked the cows ,a radio often played .CKNX was very popular at one time across rural Ontario because of its Saturday Night Barn Dance show .

Throughout a good portion of Mr. Gregg's broadcasting career he signed off his shows with the following slogan " It matters not whether you won or lost but how you played the game "

Tory Gregg passed away in London Ont. at the age of 70 in 1976 . Many still remember him fondly and his presence for all those years in small town harness racing circles place him in "legendary" territory .

254. Charlotte Ewen REID (Charlotte Elizabeth "Lottie" MacKAY141, Alexander55, Angus16, John4, Murdo1) was born on September 19, 1921 in Bruce Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada and died on August 15, 2021 in Hanover, Grey Co, Ontario, Canada, aged 99.

Charlotte Ewen REID was born on September 19, 1921 at the Kincardine Hospital to parents William John and Charlotte (MacKay) Reid. She was the fourth of six children: John (1917), Ellen (1919), Annie (1920), Charlotte, Margaret (1927), and Shirley (1936). The Reid family farmed in Bruce Township, between Tiverton and Glammis, where the kids attended S.S. #3. Charlotte went on to attend Toronto Bible College, Teacher's College, and a Church College in Illinois. It was here where she worked in an ammunitions factory during World War II. In 1947 Charlotte started her first teaching position at a remote school in the community of Wabigoon in northwestern Ontario. The following year she moved back to southwestern Ontario and New Dundee where she taught grades 1 \endash 8. I 1949, she had the opportunity of a lifetime and moved to Jamaica to work in a mission school. Charlotte remained here through 1952, before returning to Ontario.

As a teenager, Charlotte met a young man by the name of Gordon Edgar Wilson. Gordon's cousin was in the same Sunday school as Charlotte and in turn, they attended the same picnic together… and as they say the rest is history. Charlotte and Gordon were married on Thursday, April 7, 1955 at Shiloh United Brethren Church on the 4th of Bruce. The newlyweds quickly settled on the Wilson Homestead on the 14th of Greenock. At this time Charlotte gave up her teaching career, after seven years of service, to begin their family. The following year, 1956, they welcomed John, with June (1957), Marilyn (1958), and Lloyd (1962) soon following. As you can imagine, life was busy for Charlotte during the ensuing years and she taught, cared, and provided for her young family.

When not teaching her own children Charlotte volunteered her time at Sunday school, acting as both the superintendent and teacher through the years. She was also actively involved in the Pinkerton Women's Institute for many years. However, to be quite honest Charlotte was content with her quiet life on the farm. She enjoyed a large garden yearly, full of produce for her family and some flowers to add colour and beauty. There was also the raspberry patch and who could forget Charlotte's baking, particularly her bread. Yum, yum! On the farm, she also loved all the animals, especially the dogs and cats. Although most of the animals were outdoor pets, Jiffy, a K-9, became a favourite as he always enjoyed cozying up to Charlotte when relaxing on the verandah.

In her free time, Charlotte absolutely loved to sew, especially quilts. She was very talented, and her generous nature meant she gave away a lot of her creations. Charlotte produced more than one hundred quilts throughout her life with each product of love taking anywhere from six weeks to eight months to perfect. Charlotte also loved to sing. She sang in a choir as well as a quartet formed with her two sisters and a sister-in-law. In her free time, she enjoyed transcribing music into pieces that could be performed by a trio or quartet. Charlotte was also an avid reader and would often read anything she could get her hands on. When it came to television, Charlotte enjoyed watching "Columbo," "The Price is Right" and anything that was a murder mystery or needed solving. Although Charlotte's travel history was limited, she was very content and enjoyed day trips exploring Southwestern Ontario. Finally, she also returned to teaching in later years, whereby Charlotte taught adult literacy in her home. As the saying goes, once a teacher, always a teacher!

At the age of eighty-five Gordon finally conceded to retire from the farm and the couple soon called Walkerton home. Although different, Charlotte made the most of each day and enjoyed additional time with family and friends. She also took a liking to crosswords, apparently always having one on the go, and joined a quilting group that got together once a week.

Faith also played an important role in Charlotte's life. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Shiloh United Brethren Church. She helped with a variety of missions throughout her life and went onto attend Pinkerton United Church. In recent years, Charlotte and Gordon became members of Immanuel Evangelical Missionary Church (now Paisley Missionary Church) where they enjoyed praying and singing together. Her church family was a true extension of her family, and she would do anything to help someone in need.

In August of 2014, Gordon had a portion of his leg amputated and they then moved into Elgin Abbey in Chesley for more support. Sadly, Gordon died in July of 2016 and Charlotte was alone for the first time in over 60 years. Her faith, family, and strong will allowed her to make the best of each day.

In April of 2017 Charlotte moved to Hanover, and The Village to be closer to her sister, Annie. Here, she lived out her remaining days in relatively good health until a recent hospitalization. Sadly, Charlotte passed away at Hanover & District Hospital on Sunday, August 15, 2021, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

Cherished mother of John (Leah) of Edmonton, June Wilson (Tony Hart) of Ottawa, Marilyn Wilson (Jim Thompson) of Guelph and Lloyd (Linda Challis) of Thornhill. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon (2016), sisters Ellen Colwell, Annie Campbell, brother John Reid and her parents William and Charlotte (MacKay) Reid.

Charlotte married Gordon WILSON, son of James "Edgar" WILSON and Mary Jessie ROSS, on April 7, 1955 in , Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada. Gordon was born on September 2, 1921 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada, died on July 7, 2016 in Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada, aged 94, and was buried in Purdy's Cemetery Greenock Twp. Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada.

Gordon Edgar Wilson was born on the family farm in Greenock Township on September 2, 1921 to Edgar and Jessie (Ross) Wilson. He was the second oldest of four children: Scott, Gordon, Rose, and Merle. Gordon loved tracing his family roots.
In fact, his parents Edgar, 24, a farmer (son of James Wilson and Barbara Hutton) and Jessie Ross, 19 (daughter of William J. Ross and Louisa Mawhinney) were married the 14th of June 1916 in Paisley. Their witnesses were Mary Wilson and Annie Ross, both of Paisley. It is said that his ancestors came by ox cart from West Gwillimbury, to settle in Greenock Township.
The Wilson family farmed their homestead on the 14th that had been in the family since 1866. Gordon attended S.S. #8 (Bradley School) and managed to get in one year of high school. Then, regrettably, Gordon's mother died when his sisters were young, eight and twelve.
Subsequently Gordon's duties within the family changed and he spent much more time in the house helping with his sisters. As a result, it has been said Gordon made the best biscuits ever! Gordon went on to help his father on the farm and his brother Scott's farm on the 16th.
They milked, had Shorthorn cattle, and all labour was done by horse. It was then that Gordon was conscripted into the army as part of the WW II efforts. He was a member of the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards or the "Plugs" where he served for four years' mostly as a corporal in Italy and spent some time towards the end of the war in Holland.
It was here that he served with many other locals, making many life-long friends from across the province. Gordon did not speak much of the war, if at all. "Those who served are reluctant to acknowledge the part they played, as is a soldier's way." (S. Ruttan) This remained true until Gordon travelled to Apeldoorn, in central Netherlands, later in life and experienced the healing of the land and the people.
It was then that Gordon was able to talk about his experiences. Every five years, since the 40th anniversary of VE-Day in 1985, there is a parade in Apeldoorn to pay tribute to the Canadian soldiers who had no swagger back in 1945, just humility and duty. More than 7,600 Canadians died in the nine dreadful months it took to liberate the Netherlands.
They are buried in cemeteries from Adegem in Belgium, to Rheinberg in Germany. Gordon appreciated being able to visit some, if not all, of the numerous war memorials there. Ten years following the end of WW II, a cousin of Gordon's was in the same Sunday School as a Charlotte Ewen Reid and as it happened they attended the same picnic and the rest was history.
Charlotte and Gordon were married April 7, 1955 at Shiloh United Brethren Church on the 4th of Bruce. He was just that much older (17 days to be exact) than his new bride Charlotte and he often joked that he was "the boss" due to this fact! Four children followed, John in 1956, June in 1957, Marilyn in 1958, and Lloyd in 1962.
If asked about pets, Gordon would respond - "Yeah we had 30 cows, pigs and hens, and farmed 200 acres (of which 40 acres was bush)." However, he could still name off some of his beloved Black Clydesdales, from year's past like Queenie and Duke. Gordon was all about farming, he lived and breathed it. He loved all the rhythms of the farm year, seeding to harvest, plowing through to hibernation and then back to seeding.
He loved spending extra time with his horses and raising the colts '96 which he usually took to the bush to work. He enjoyed reading Reader's Digest, or any book, magazine or newspaper he could get his hands on. His favourite books though were those by the author James Herriot, a British veterinary surgeon who used his many years of experience to write stories about animals and their owners.
In later years, he travelled with Charlotte to regions that honoured both fallen and fighting soldiers. He visited Italy, England and Holland. Gordon and Charlotte also covered most of Canada, travelling as far north as James Bay, as far west as Vancouver and Edmonton, and as far east as Newfoundland and the Maritimes.
At the age of eighty-five Gordon finally decided to retire and the couple moved into an apartment in Walkerton. This move was not easy for Gordon, as he would often go out to the farm for a visit 2 '96 3 times a week in the good weather. Gordon was best described as being an honest, steady man with a good sense of humour and a quick wit.
As an example, when asked about replacing his aging rocking chair with a Lazy Boy, Gordon quickly responded, "Why? I already have one!" He had a great memory and always desired to be out of the limelight. If one could use only one word to describe Gordon, however, it would have to be hard working.
And he learned this well, as both his father and brother Scott were also. Having lived through the Great Depression and the war, Gordon never wasted anything and would eat anything ... "Waste not, want not!" His children often remember their dad using the common phrase, "If you are looking for something to do. . . .", a look they tried to avoid. Sadly, Gordon passed away with his wife by his side on Thursday, July 7, 2016 in his 95th year.
He will be sadly missed by his companion of 61 years, Charlotte. Loving father of John (Leah) of Edmonton, June Wilson (Tony Hart) of Ottawa, Marilyn Wilson (Jim Thompson) of Guelph and Lloyd (Linda Challis) of Woodbridge. He will live on in the hearts and minds of his grandchildren, Stephanie, Scott, Amy and Russell.
Gordon will be sadly missed by his sister Merle Wrightson of Guelph and sister-in-law Evelyn Wilson of Walkerton. He was predeceased by his brother Scott, sister Rose Remington and his parents, Edgar and Jessie (Ross) Wilson.
