William Henry Hetchler was well known as a top carpenter and craftsman in DeKalb Ill. He worked for Sherm Boardman who built many of the housed and bldgs in DeKalb for Jacob Haish who owned the Coal and lumber company and the First National Bank from the 1800's to early 1900's.
When Jake Haish became interested in the manufacuturing of barbed wire he had William Henry and his blacksmith build the working model to make barbed wire as a marketable item their model was the first practical machine over the other experiments of that time.
Jacoab Haish was later forced to sell his patient to Elwood and Glidden. A Small model is now in the elwood museum.
The Barb Fence Company eventually became U.S. Steel. My grandpa Bill was also known for his knack of making home brew. (26% I might add.) He passed his knowledge on to my dad and During the depression we had lots of vegtables, chickens, and many other "things" as payment for setting up a batch of beer for his friends.
William Henry repaired his own watches and also built a violin that became well known and admired for its quality and workmanship.
