Obituary for J. Nelson FLETT
On Saturday, September 19th, J. Nelson Flett passed away suddenly at his home on Con. 14, Greenock Twp., after a long period of ill health. Mr. Flett was the only child of the late William Flett and his wife Mary Thom, and was sixty-six years of age. His entire life was spent on the 14th of Greenock, with exception of a few years residence in Pinkerton. He was twice married, his first wife being Frances Roumey, who passed away shortly after the birth of their daughter, Vivian, now Mrs. Wellington Ferris of Glammis. Later he married Jean MacKay, who survives with a son, James, on the home farm on the 14th of Greenock, and a daughter, Mrs. Harold Alexander of Kitchener.
Mr. Flett was highly esteemed among his neighbors, being a man of industry integrity and ability. During his lifetime he had been a kindly and thoughtful neighbor, generous in his desire to help others. His passing is a matter of great regret, and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to those who mourn the loss of a husband and father. The funeral, one of the largest seen in the district, was held from his late residence on Monday afternoon. In the absence of his pastor, the Rev. W.H. Sommerell, the service was conducted by a former pastor and family friend, the Rev. W.M. Lee of Schomberg, who spoke of his contact with Mr. Flett, and the many hours of enjoyment he had experienced with him and his family.

A highly respected resident of this community, Robert William Stewart, passed away at the Bruce County Hospital, Walkerton, on Wednesday morning, July 14th, following an illness of two weeks duration. He was in his 72nd year.
He was born on the 14th Con. of Greenock Twp., the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Stewart. He attended SS #7 Greenock, and for a time worked the farm of his parents, and in 1911 moved to Lot 4, Con 19, in the same township, where he has since resided. In 1912 he married Ella Cruickshank of Greenock Twp. who survives him. Also surviving is one son, Harvey. There are two grandchildren, Olive and Orval.
Mr. Stewart also leaves three sisters and three brothers: (Bella) Mrs. Amos Webb of Greenock Twp.; (Mable) Mrs. Geo. Hood of Sarnia and (Ethel) Mrs. Albert Hicks of Guelph; Rev. Jos. Stewart of Cooksville; Emmerson Stewart of Toronto and Roy Stewart of Prince George, BC. Another brother George predeceased him in 1948.
All his lifetime Mr. Stewart was associated with Purdy's Church on the 14th of Greenock. He had a keen interest in the welfare of his native township and the home community, and for more than 20 years served on the board for SS #8 Greenock. Although he had never held any other municipal or political office, he followed closely the affairs of his township, the provincial and federal politics and his opinion was valued not only by his friends and neighbours, but as well by those in public office.
Since his late youth, Mr. Stewart had been on of the most capable and energetic members of the Paisley Agricultural Society and had besides the presidency, at one time or another, occupied almost every office within the organisation. It was rare indeed that an agricultural society meeting was held without Mr. Stewart among those present, and if it was a work party to prepare for the annual fall fair, to make improvements at the fair grounds or detail to make the annual canvas for donations to the prize list, Mr. Stewart was always available.
In association with his brothers, Mr. Stewart for many years conducted a dining service on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition which had built up a large following of regular patrons who returned year after year to eat at the Stewart tables where they were assured of good clean food, and a cordial welcome from "Billy" Stewart or his brothers.
The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, with services at 2:30 o'clock, at the family residence on the 20th of Greenock Twp. Interment will be in Purdy's Cemetery.

Mrs. Ella Stewart, Greenock Twp., received word Friday, March 20, of the serious illness of her brother, J.W. Cruickshank, at his home in Detroit. Mrs. Stewart went to the city the following day.
Mr. Cruickshank passed away in hospital at Detroit on Monday of this week, and the funeral took place Wednesday. Harvey Stewart, a nephew of Mr. Cruickshank, and his son Orville, of Greenock Twp. motored to Detroit to attend the last rites.
Mr. Cruickshank was born on the 14th con. of Greenock and will be remembered by many residents of this area. He left as a young man to go to the Canadian West, but returned East and had been a resident of Detroit for many years.

A quiet but pretty wedding took place at "The Maples", Mr. Jos. Roumey's residence, last Wednesday evening, Sept. 22, at S o'clock, when their daughter Miss Frances, was married to Mr. J. Nelson Flett in the presence of the immediate relatives. The marriage took place under an arch of evergreens in the parlor, and was performed by Rev. J. McKinnon of Pinkerton. The bride who was given away by her father was attired in a beautiful gown of white silk mull, trimmed with lace and satin ribbon, and wore the conventional wedding veil and orange blossoms and carried a bouquet of roses and maiden hair fern. She was attended by her sister Miss Sadie, who wore a dress of pale pink mull, and wore the groom's favor, a handsome gold brooch.
Mr. Ernest Webb ably supported the groom who presented him with a pearl tie pin. The groom's gift to the bride was a gold watch. After congratulations, the bridal party partook of a dainty supper. At 8 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Roumey held a reception and over a hundred guests enjoyed themselves immensely until a late hour. The bride's presents were very beautiful and costly.

The death of Mrs. Nelson Flett, which occurred Saturday morning, has caused much genuine grief in the community. The deceased, whose maiden name was Miss Frances Roumey, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Los. Roumey, at whose home the death occurred. She was aged 22 years and 10 months. Just nineteen months ago she was married to Mr. Nelson Flett, who with an infant daughter survives to mourn a loving wife and mother. The deceased had been ill for several months and endured much suffering with true Christian patience. Much has been taken from this husband and little one, sweet ties have been severed, but much is left. The Christians hope and fadeless memories still are theirs. Her parents, five sisters and four brothers also survive. The funeral on Tuesday afternoon to Purdy's Cemetery was largely attended, and was conducted by Rev. Thomas Wilson of Walkerton. Mr. Harvey Roumey of Detroit attended his sister's funeral.

OBITUARY FOR WILLIAM JAMES CRUICKSHANK

Victim of a paralytic stroke, suffered Thursday afternoon last, William James Cruickshank of the 14th Con of Greenock died Tuesday in Walkerton Hospital. Mr. Cruickshank had been in normally good health prior to the seizure, and had been in Toronto on business on Tuesday of last week. He was in his 75th year.
Born at Lockerby on Dec. 2, 1886, William J. Cruickshank was the son of the late John C. Cruickshank and Elizabeth Flett. As a youngster he went with his parents to the 14th of Greenock and attended SS #7 Greenock. He had farmed all his life on the family farm on the 14th until 5 years ago, when he gave up farming and went to make his home with his brother-in-law, Harry Mutrie, on the 14th. He had continued to carry on his business of drover, however, until his death.
Mr. Cruickshank was a member of Knox Memorial United Church, Pinkerton, where he was chairman of the board of stewards and a member of the board of trustees. He also was a member of Dunedin Lodge, I.O.O.F., Glamis.
On June 1, 1916 he was married to Ethel Mutrie, who survives. They had one daughter, who died in infancy.
Surviving are a nephew, Willard Metcalfe, and three sisters; (Catherine) Mrs. Wilson Metcalfe, of London; (Jean) Mrs, Clarence Fraser of Port Elgin and (Hazel) Mrs. E.D. Elwes of Paisley.
The funeral will take place this Thursday afternoon with service at the Stoddart Funeral Home, Paisley, at 2 p.m., conducted by Alfred Fry. Burial will take place in Purdy's Cemetery. An Odd Fellows memorial service was held by members of the Dunedin Lodge at the funeral home Tuesday night.

The death occurred in hospital at London on Thursday last of Mrs. Wilson Metcalf, a native Greenock Twp. She had been in failing health for a number of years.
Mrs. Metcalf, the former Catherine May Cruickshank, was born Nov. 17, 1888, on the 14th of Greenock, a daughter of the late John Cruickshank and Elizabeth Flett. She attended SS #7 Bradley school.
In 1908 she was married to Wilson Metcalf and they farmed in Greenock Twp. Mr. Metcalf died in 1929. Mrs. Metcalf was member of the Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are one son, Willard, of Greenock Twp., and two daughters, (Pearl) Mrs. Clifford Chapin of Brantford, and (Jennie) Mrs. George Gregg of Greenock; also two sisters, (Jean) Mrs. Clarence Fraser and (Hazel) Mrs. E.D. Elwes, both of Paisley. There are 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one daughter, (Reta) Mrs. Clifford Tanner and three brothers.
Private family funeral service took place at the Stoddart Funeral Home, Paisley, Saturday afternoon. Burial took place in Purdy's Cemetery. Pastor Alfred Fry of Cargill was officiating.

OBITUARY FOR JOHN GEORGE MacKAY

In failing health for more than a year, but only seriously ill for the past six weeks, John George MacKay passed away early Friday morning, March 1st, at his home on Orchard Street. He was 56 years old.
Mr. MacKay was born on Lot 35, Con 8, (Lovat) in Bruce Twp., son of the late John and Annie MacKay, pioneer settlers in the district. As youth he attended SS #10 Bruce and Greenock and later assisted his father in the operation of the home farm and a sawmill at Lovat. On Dec. 23, 1914, he married Jean Bernice Cruickshank and the young couple took up farming on the homestead which they continued to operate until two years ago when illness compelled his retirement to reside in Paisley. Several months ago he became seriously ill, but made a good recovery and finally was able to be about town again. About six or seven weeks ago he was again stricken with a heart attack and was removed to Bruce County Hospital at Walkerton, where he lay in critical condition until Feb. 24th, when he was brought to his home here. Mr. MacKay was unable to take nourishment and became gradually weaker, passing quietly away on Friday morning.
He is survived by his widow and one son, Revis, as well as one small grandson. A brother James B. MacKay, Con 6, Bruce Twp. and one sister (Margaret) Mrs. James Bryce of Ripley also survive.
Mr. MacKay was widely known and respected throughout the community. He was a member of Aldworth Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and Abiram Lodge, I.O.O.F., of Paisley, and a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was keenly interested in the annual Paisley Fair, and for years had been a director of the agricultural society.
The funeral was held on Sunday with a private service at the family residence, Orchard St., followed by a public service in Westminster Presbyterian church, which was filled to capacity, with scores standing, by friends and acquaintances come to pay their final tribute. The services were conducted by pastor, Rev. W.E. Smyth, assisted by Rev. Mr. Peddie of the Presbyterian Church, Walkerton. The members of Aldworth Lodge, No. 235, A.F. & A.M., attended in a body and performed the last rites of their order. Interment was in Willow Creek Cemetery, Lovat. Pallbearers were also members of the Masonic order: Jas.A. McKinnon, R.R. McGregor, John Rose, Grant Hay, Harry McGregor and Jas. Pace. The flowerbearers included, at the request of the deceased, the five school girls who boarded at the MacKay home: Mariam and Audrey Needham, Jean Bryce, Alberta Reid and Joyce Trelford; also Harold Nelson, Jack, James and Clarence Mc Gillivary, Clarence McKeeman, Jack McArthur, Alex McLean, Roy and Chester Teeple, Horace Clark, Gordon Neely and Jos. Mcwhinney.
Among the many from a distance who attended the service were Mr. and Mrs. R.A. McDonald, Mr. Geo. Matheson, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Matheson, Mrs. Mary Matheson of Zorra; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Cruickshank of Detroit; Mrs. C.S. Wilson of Toronto; Miss Mary and Mr. John Lockston of Galt, as well as other friends and relatives from Port Elgin, Detroit, Kincardine, Tiverton, Hanover, Underwood and Walkerton.

Jean next married Clarence A. FRASER, son of John Dale FRASER and Jane HANNA, in 1948. Clarence was born on April 5, 1877 in Elderslie Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada32 and died in 1960 in Lucknow, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 83.
55. Margaret Edna CARR (Margaret FLETT22, James4, William1) was born on May 8, 1913 in Greenock Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada24,26 and died on May 14, 2014 in Kincardine, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 101.
Margaret married Melvin HETSLER, son of Robert HETSLER and Lena Mae EVANS. Melvin was born on April 14, 1912 in Brant Twp, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada24,26 and died on June 2, 1981 in Kincardine, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada24,26 aged 69.
