• She worked as a dressmaker and lived wit her father in 1861 in St. Mary's, Perth Co, Ontario, Canada.

Mary married Rev. Dr. Archibald Alexander CAMERON, son of Duncan CAMERON and Christina McGREGOR, about 1870. Archibald was born on February 13, 1841 in Lawers, Lochtayside, Perth, Scotland5,7 and died on December 30, 1925 in Ottawa, Carleton Co, Ontario, Canada7 aged 84.

The Reverend Dr. A.A. Cameron served twice as minister of First Baptist Church (1871-1882 and 1897-1911). He ministered during a period of rapid expansion for both the city of Ottawa and for the church. These were challenging times which would see the congregation grow in membership, and a new church edifice built.

Mr. Cameron was the son of the Reverend Duncan Cameron, who emigrated from Scotland to take the pastorate at Breadalbane Baptist Church in the Ottawa Valley. A.A. Cameron attended schools in Vankleek Hill and L'Orignal, and then attended Woodstock College to study for the ministry.

Following his ordination in 1867, Mr. Cameron accepted a call to Strathroy, Ontario. In 1871, First, Ottawa invited Mr. Cameron to be their minister. He had been recommended by Dr. R.A. Fyfe, Principal of Woodstock College. After several months of correspondence, Mr. Cameron agreed to come to Ottawa to preach for two Sundays and to assist in special meetings. Following his visit, the congregation unanimously renewed their invitation, which he accepted. When Mr. Cameron commenced his ministry in October 1871, the membership of the congregation, including non-residents, totaled 60.

In 1875 a controversy revolved around First Baptist Church and Mr. Cameron. It had its origin at the Ministers' Conference held in Toronto, where Dr. A.H. Strong, a professor at the Theological Seminary in Rochester, New York, preached a sermon on Baptist principles. He was followed by Mr. Cameron who delivered an address on baptism by immersion. Upon hearing it, the Ottawa branch of the Evangelical Alliance took exception to some of Mr. Cameron's statements and suggested that he recant. He refused, and to explain his position further, he delivered a series of lectures dealing with the subject of adult baptism and other questions pertaining to the Christian church.

Nicholas Link wrote, "Curiosity to see and hear the clever young preacher who was creating so much stir by his out-and-out denunciation of any attempt against free speech and liberty of conscience, especially in matters of religion, brought large crowds to the Baptist church, and the fairness with which he discussed the questions, and the convincing arguments advanced, gained for Mr. Cameron many admirers and much sympathy and respect for the Baptist cause."

During Mr. Cameron's ministry, 320 names were added to the roll. The Queen Street Chapel was too small, and on occasion people were turned away from worship services. In spite of a serious economic depression in the country, the congregation "by Divine Providence was guided to see far into the future when it planned the sanctuary which is part of our heritage today." The present edifice opened in 1878.

In August 1882, Mr. Cameron resigned to accept the pastorate at First Baptist Church, Winnipeg. Following this, he had pastorates in Denver, Colorado and Brooklyn, New York.

After the resignation of the Reverend Robert R. McKay from FBC in 1897, and after a time of some turmoil, Mr. Cameron received an invitation from the congregation to return. Feeling he had more work to do in Ottawa, he accepted the call, and started his second pastorate in October 1897. By this point, the membership was about 600, with 200 in the Sunday School.

By 1898, the congregations of First Baptist and McPhail Memorial Baptist were involved in outreach work on Bank Street between Third and Fourth Avenues in The Glebe, a community in the early stages of residential development. The outreach became a self-supporting congregation, and in 1899, Fourth Avenue Baptist Church was formally organized with a charter membership of thirty-two. Of this number, twenty people were granted letters of dismissal from FBC, ten from McPhail Memorial, and two from South Gower Baptist Church.

A controversy that emerged during Mr. Cameron's tenure (1902) was related to the Lord's Supper: the transfer from the common communion cup to the individual cup. This was a cause of vehement protest. Protracted objections to the change are recorded in the church minutes of the time. A compromise was made when a choice of the individual cup or the common cup was made available at each observance of the Lord's Supper, giving "the opportunity to all of observing the ordinance in their own preferred way." In 1912 it was agreed that the individual cup would be used exclusively.

Mr. Cameron played an active role within the Baptist movement. In July 1905, he attended the first meeting of the Baptist World Alliance in London, England. In 1906, McMaster University conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He was a member of the 1907 Union Committee that sought to unite Canadian Baptists. Mr. Cameron also served as President of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec, 1909-1910.

Mr. Cameron resigned from First, Ottawa on July 2, 1911, after twenty-five years of ministry. In his letter of resignation, he wrote: "I look back this morning with mingled feelings across a span of forty years. In 1871, then an inexperienced youth, a call from you to become its pastor. . . reached me in my home in Strathroy. You were then a mission church and the only Baptist church in Ottawa. . . [Baptists] were little known in the city so far as our principles are concerned. We are better known now with five churches and two missions. . . With the growth of the city, this mother church finds itself practically a downtown church. The growth of the city being west and south our membership has become widely scattered over the suburbs and neighbouring villages and towns. I am not as young as I was forty years ago to meet the needs and qualifications for the field under present conditions. . . I have only one desire as to the future of a church I so dearly love, and that is to cooperate with you in any policy that may secure growing efficiency in every department of service and the promotion of that unity in the spirit and good fellowship among one another which are the essentials of all church progress."
