Descendants of EDWARD IV PLANTAGENET King of EnglandSixth Generation20. * Governer Thomas WELLES (* Robert WELLES5, * Thomas WELLES4, * Robert DE WELLES3, * Cicely PLANTAGENET of York, Viscountess Welles2, Edward IV King of England1) was born in 1580 in Stourton, Whichford, Warwickshire, England1 and died on January 14, 1659 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut, USA1 aged 79.
All six children of Thomas and Alice were born in England and traveled with their parents on the "Susan and Ellen" to America in 1635. He owned a share of the Hilton Lands in New Hampshire. He went from Boston, to Saybrook, Connecticut and finally settled in Hartford in 1637. He was magistrate and treasurer of the Colony; Secretary and Commissioner of the United Colonies; elected Governer in 1655 and 1658; and was deputy Governer for several years. He removed to Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1646 and owned land on which part of the Connecticut State Prison now stands. Governer Welles died suddenly January 14, 1659, "being very well at supper and dead before midnight". It is assumed that Thomas Welles was buried in Wethersfield but was later removed to the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford where the actual spot of interment has been lost. His name is recorded there on the Founders' Monument at First Church, Hartford. Thomas married Alice TOMES, daughter of John TOMES and Ellen GUNNE, on July 5, 1615 in Long Marston, , Gloucestershire, England.1 Alice was born in 1592 in Long Marston, , Gloucestershire, England1 and died in 1640 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut, USA1 aged 48.
