The Family history of the Thomas Brown sr. family is sketchy. He was supposed to be a sailor around Groton, CT but no evidence has been found to support this. He moved his family to Dutchess County, New York after 1745 where 3 children were born and moved to Columbia County in 1760. Hannah, the youngest daughter was the only child born in Chatham, Columbia County. Thomas sr. and his wife Deborah moved to Middlefield, Ostego County, NY with Thomas jr. and Amos about 1800. Thomas sr. died there at the age of 90. Thomas was buried there, and his wife Deborah went to live with her daughter Deborah (sometimes recorded as Martha) wife of Ezra Allen in Nine Partners, NY. Deborah, widow of Thomas sr. is buried there. Brown's were in Chatham by May 15, 1774 when Thomas Brown Sr. and Jr. signed a petition to King George for an appointment of commissioners to secure for them titles to their homes . At this time settlers were merely squatters . In 1779, the year Lucy was born, Benjamin, his brothers Nathaniel and Thomas jr. and Thomas sr. all appear on a taxlist of King's District of Albany County Ny with substantial properties in New Britain, which was the old name of the Canaan-Chatham area.
