William Culham "Willy," retailer, Lieutenant Governor 1941-46. Born 24 April 1885, Gore Bay, ON; died 24 February 1957, Hawaii.
The son of Charles Woodward, founder of Woodward's stores, he joined the family business as a bookkeeper in 1907, at age 22, after a short stint with the Royal Bank. He and his brother Percival ("Puggy") rose through the ranks to take senior positions at the store.
During WWI, Willy served overseas with the First Canadian Heavy Artillery. In 1921 he married Ruth Wynn-Johnson, whose family owned the famed Alkali Lake Ranch in the Chilcotin.
With the death of his father in 1937 he became president of the company. He was also a director of the Bank of Canada and the Royal Bank. During WWII he served as a "dollar-a-year-man" in Ottawa as an advisor to C.D. Howe, then returned to BC to serve as Lieutenant Governor. At that time the Woodwards purchased Woodwynn, their farm in Saanich. Willy remained president of Woodward's until his death, when the company was taken over by his son Charles "Chunky" Woodward.
