JOHN CRUICKSHANK KILLED INSTANTLY ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
WHEN HIT BY FREIGHT TRAIN Article in Paisley Advocate, February 1950.
John Cruickshank, 87 year old former resident of Greenock Twp. and Paisley, who for the past several years has made his home at Eden Grove, was instantly killed Wednesday afternoon at 1:25 pm, when hit by a southbound CNR freight. The accident occurred at the railway crossing 100 ft directly south of the Pinkerton depot, and within sight of the Cruickshank residence. The aged man was walking east on the highway on his way to get the mail at the post office in Scott's General Store, and apparently failed to either see or hear the approaching freight train as it passed through the depot yards without stopping. Mr. Cruickshank walked almost directly into the path of the train which was travelling about 15 miles an hour. He was hurled across the right of way to land on the bank at the side of track, where the train crew found him when the freight was stopped, and the engineer and conductor hastened to his side. He sustained multiple injuries, including severe head cuts, a possible fractured scull, broken arm, and a number of minor hurts. Dr. Donald Milne of Paisley and Dr. T.A. Sinclair, Walkerton, the coroner, gave the opinion that Mr. Cruickshank died instantly.
The way freight was in charge of Wm. Dobney of Palmerston, the conductor, and James Manser of Southampton, the engineer. According to their version of the accident Mr. Cruickshank approached the railway crossing, walking slowly. The whistle of the locomotive was sounded repeatedly as the train rolled through the station yard and when it appeared to the engineer that the aged pedestrian was about to walk into the path of the train, brakes were applied, but Mr. Cruickshank stepped onto the track directly into the path of the train to be struck and hurled across the rails to the east side of the right of way. The victim of the accident was dead when members of the train crew reached his side. The train was held until the coroner, Dr. T.A. Sinclair of Walkerton, together with provincial police officers had made a preliminary investigation of the circumstances surrounding the accident. It is not yet known whether an inquest will be held.
Mr. Cruickshank was a well known and highly respected resident of the district, having farmed for many years on Lot 8, Con 15, Greenock Twp. before coming to live in Paisley about 30 years ago. After the death of his wife several years ago he continued to make his home in Paisley, until seven years ago when he went to live in Eden Grove.
He is survived by three daughters and one son; Mrs. Catherine Metcalfe; (Jean) Mrs. Clarence Fraser of Owen Sound; (Hazel) Mrs. E.D. Elwes of Paisley, and William Cruickshank on the old homestead.
The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, with private services at his home, in Eden Grove, followed by a public service in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Paisley, at 2:30 pm. Interment will be in Purdy's Cemetery.

A profusion of gladioli, sweetpeas and bridle wreath made a most effective setting for a smart mid-summer wedding which took place in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Paisley, on Wednesday, August 15th at 5 p.m., when Hazel Elizabeth, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cruickshank, Paisley, became the bride of Edward Donald Elwes, son of Mrs. Elwes and the late John R. Elwes of Paisley. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, looked charming in a gown of rose georgette trimmed with Spanish lace and shoes and stockings to match and a large hat. The bride's bouquet was of sweetheart roses, lily of the valley and maidenhair fern. The maid of honor, Miss Doubledee, of Cleveland, Ohio, was gowned in a frock of lemon georgette and carried sweetpeas and a maidenhair fern. The bridesmaid, Miss Reta Metcalfe, niece of the bride, wore yellow georgette and carried sweetpeas and maidenhair fern. The groom was attended by Mr. Percy Elwes of Detroit. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A.H. Wilson. During the signing of the register Mrs. J.G. MacKay, sister of the bride, sang "I Love You Truly." The wedding music was played by Mrs. John Smart. After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, where a buffet luncheon was served to seventy-five guests. The decorations were carried out in a color scheme of pink and white. Later the bride and groom left by motor for a few days trip, the bride travelling in a dress of flatte crepe, a navy blue, fur trimmed coat, with hat, gloves and purse to match.
