Mrs. William Watson, the last remaining one of the first settlers on the Elora Road between Paisley and Ellengowan, passed to her rest on Friday last. The deceased, whose maiden name was Jane Ritchie, was a native of Tyrone County, Ireland, where she first saw the light in 1827. After emigrating to Canada her parents settled in Vaughan Twp., York Co., where she was married in 1849 to William Watson. In 1854 they came to the trackless waste of bush which was then just being opened out by the cutting through of the Elora Road, and settled on the farm in Elderslie which became her home for the remainder of her life. The deceased has always enjoyed good health up to about six months ago when she began to fail. She was always respected in the community as a hard-working, industrious woman, a good mother, friend and neighbour. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Paisley Cemetery, and the remains where followed to the grave by a large concourse of people. The services were conducted by the Rev. As the funeral of the late Wm. Watson was coming along the Elora Road South on Friday afternoon last, the mail train hove in sight and passed over the crossing before more than two thirds of the teams had got over. WILLIAM JOHN WATSON RETIRES
Paisley Advocate 1906.
Willie John Watson, before giving up possession of his farm to Mr. Porter, invited a large number of friends and acquaintances to spend a social and enjoyable evening under his roof on Thursday night. The guests began to assemble from different parts and in a short time the house was well filled, which bore evidence of the hearty response to his call. The night was spent in various kinds of amusements. Every person present seemed to be in the best of spirits, perfectly happy, all evidently enjoying themselves to the full capacity of their heart's desire. When 12 o'clock came all partook of a most sumptuous repast. The eatables were all in taste and abundance, and which the Prince of Wales would have envied had he been present and had he not been permitted to satisfy his appetite from Mr. Watson's rich bill of fare. But we can assure you that had His Highness been present he would have been treated to the same as the rest, and which, we can vouch, was well worthy to grace ant table in Windsor Castle. Willie John is a number one host, and if he can manage all things well accordingly as that of preparing for a single night's enjoyment, we can see no reason why he should desire to change his present condition of single bliss and freedom.
