81. Egerton L. BALLACHEY (John "Egerton" M.D.49, John27, George16, George Baker10, George Frederick Demetrius2, Panayoty1) was born on August 27, 1908 in , , Iowa, USA, died on May 9, 1969 in , Contra Costa, California, USA, aged 60, and was buried in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, USA.

With the death of Egerton L. Ballachey from a pulmonary embolism in Walnut Creek on May 9, 1969, almost forty years of an intermittent and varied but constantly loyal and deep-rooted association with psychology and with Berkeley came to an end.
Egerton Leopold Ballachey was born on August 7, 1908, in Ireton, Iowa, the son of Dr. John Egerton Ballachey and Ada Garst Ballachey. He received his early education in the public schools of various Iowa towns, was graduated from the Sioux City Central High School in 1925, and took his A.B. degree from Iowa's Morningside College where he had majored in English, philosophy, and psychology. The greatest of these seemed to be psychology, for when he left Iowa for his graduate education he chose psychology and the animal laboratory at the University of Minnesota. After two years there, and with an M.A. in Neurological Psychology granted in 1931, Ballachey accepted an appointment as a Teaching Fellow in Berkeley's Department of Psychology. Here he began his association with E. C. Tolman. In 1933 Ballachey became a University Fellow, and in 1934 he took his Ph.D. At that time Ballachey was still constant in his faith to animal psychology; the printed "Programme" of his final examination for his Ph.D. lists seven research publications in the field of animal learning--a notable feat for a graduate student even in Tolman's prolific laboratory. But this loyalty to the white rat was not to last much longer. Ballachey's post-Ph.D. years were to be devoted to the study of man--to teaching and research in social psychology, in psychology of personality, and in clinical psychology.
Ballachey's first appointment after leaving Berkeley was to the faculty of Michigan State College where, on June 30, 1936, he married Maude Louise Baily. Ballachey remained a member of the Michigan State College faculty from 1935 to 1946, although during the last two years he was on a war service leave of absence as Chief Psychologist in the O.S.S. (1944-45), and as Research Analyst for the United States Strategic Bombing Survey (1945-46).

Egerton married Maude Louise BAILY on June 30, 1936 in , , Michigan, USA. Maude was born on April 14, 1911 and died on July 21, 1996 in , , California, USA, aged 85.

Robert "Bob" Galbraith Ballachey died Sunday, March 30, five days short of his 96th birthday, in Oakmont following a brief illness. He attended Oakland Tech and Piedmont High Schools before attending the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with the class of 1933. During the summer of his senior year at Cal, Bob took a world tour on the Dollar Line's President Adams, playing the drums in a small band made up of his college buddies.

Following graduation from Cal at the height of the Depression, Bob joined the staff of Margaret Burnham's and worked there until the business was sold and he started his own career in business. That career was interrupted by WW II, when Bob joined the Army and was eventually stationed at Ft. Scott (San Francisco) with the Coast Artillery. Following the war, he owned and operated several businesses before settling in the construction supply business until his retirement in 1984.

Bob raised his family in Sleepy Hollow where he was active as the first president of the homes association as well as other community involvements. He and Dodie moved to Oakmont in 1976 where he was active in many associations and enjoyed gardening and playing golf several times a week.
