From a sketch written by her daughter Helen Irwin Ringen in December 1982:
Charles Irwin and Catherine McGillivray came to Lakeview Township, Imperial Ward County, ND in 1900. Charles, a Minnesota native, came with his older brother George to file on a homestead. Their sister, Emily (Mrs. Herman Haack), lived nearby on Herman's claim. Catherine (Kate) came from Inkster with her father, Hugh, and sister, Mary< and an unmarried great-uncle George Orr. Their homesteads adjoined each other and their sod shanties were built on the corners where the homesteads met. The rest of Hugh's family remained on the farm at Inkster until June 1902. Charley and Kate were married Christmas Eve at the McGillivray home. Charley's homestead was about two miles south of the McGillivrays'. They lived in a three room house, which by 1912 was home for themselves and their five children. For a number of years they lived in Bowbells, where Charley with his brother George, operated a livery stable. On their return to the farm, the house was enlarged, their daughter Ruth was born and it was here that Charley died October 4, 1922. Kate and her children with hired help operated the farm until 1928; after which it was rented until it was sold to Manor Wade in 1968.

Fine horses were a specialty with Charles. He took great pride in grooming and training his harness horses and in later years his Belgian draft horses. Both Charley and Kate took part in civic and community affairs serving on township and school boards. Charles and Kate lived in Burke County when he died.
In 1936, Catherine with her 15 year old daughter Ruth went to California to make their home at Redding where Dorothy and Paul lived. Catherine went to work, sometimes as a companion, sometimes as a housekeeper and even tried fruit picking . . During the approximately 30 years that Kate called California home, she made frequent trips back to North Dakota. Seattle was a stopover point where she visited Flo, Sarah, Beth, Will and their families, in the Bowbells area there was Jennie, Hugh and George; a visit to Minnesota was so that she could visit Margaret in Minneapolis and Vera and her son Howard in Austin. In later years, Don and Ella were living in Des Moines, Iowa, but a short drive from Austin enabled her to see them.
Catherine generously helped her children through difficult times. She was a loving mother and grandmother when she stayed with Helen and her children after Wesley's death. After Bill Redding's death, she stayed with Ruth and her children. She returned to North Dakota for the last and final time in 1966, making her home in Kenmare. She enjoyed the times when Hugh and Jennie stopped in to see her so much. She passed away at the Minot hospital the 18th of August 1968. . . ."

Our father, William McGillivray, the fourth child of Hugh and Jean McGillivray, was born in Bruce County, Ontario, July 11, 1882. He was less than a year old when the family left Canada for Inkster, ND. There he grew up, attended school, and helped with the farming and such.
Then about 1900, the family left Inkster for Ward County (later called Burke County) in Western ND. Sometime along in there he went to a barber school, but became a farmer.
He met and married (4/25/1904) Lillie Franks (born in Milbank, SD) who had moved with her family from SD. They lived near the village of Edson where he farmed with his brother George. In 1921, they moved near Kenmare so their growing family could attend high school.
