The Hanbidge family emigrated to Canada from Wicklow County, Ireland in 1832. The ocean voyage took 13 weeks. They settled in Peterborough County. Twenty ye ars later, in 1852, the youngest son, John and two other men made the long trek to the Queen's Bush, Arran Twp. in quest of land. John procured 200 acres, being lots 2 and 3 Con. 2. Lot 2 has been in possession of the Hanbidge family ever since. The Crown title indicates a $50.00 deposit was made at the Southampton Land Office and later S200.00 when the Crown deed was issued. Before returning to Peterborough that year John built a log shanty on the newly claimed land. In March of the follow- ing year (1853) he and his young wife, the former Ann Crowe, and their two small sons, John, 3 and Robert 1 ye ar, made the trip with a team of oxen and a "jumper" sleigh. They came by way of Mono Mills and Guelph. The last 2-1/ 2 miles w ere made on foot by following the blaze on the trees. .A second larger cabin was later built about 35 rods west of the present barn. A third dwelling was built in 1870 and enlarged and bricked in 1905. The frame barn was built by pioneer John in 1875 and rebuilt by his grandson John Morley in 1957.
About the year 1870 the family acquired 200 more acres of land and kept a large number of cows. A cheese fac- tory was built on the property and operated for many y ears. The first cheese maker was David Butchard of Owen Sound. Also a blacksmith shop was built and son Robert was the blacksmith who served the area for some y ears.
The "Homestead" as the Hanbidge place has come to be called over the years, carries a sign on one of its granite gate posts with the name of each family owner. They are John Hanbidge Sr. 1852-1904; Robert Hanbidge 1904-- 1910; John Hanbidge Jr. 1910-1936; John Morley Han- bidge 1936-1979. At present the owner is Annie Hanbidge B arber, granddaughter of the pioneer.
To pioneer John and Ann Hanbidge were born nine children. All but the two eldest were born at the Home- stead place. John Jr. was the eldest. For a time he was a circuit riding Methodist minister in Melita, Man. and near St. Paul, Min. He returned to Arran where he farmed. He then frequently supplied on occasion as preacher in churches of the area. Robert was a blacksmith and carriage maker in Southampton, as well as a farmer. In later years he was a cattle drover in Port Elgin. He and his wife, Frances Murton, had nine of a family. One of his sons, John became a Judge in Prince Albert, Sask. and another son Leith, also a lawyer, became Member of Parliament and later Lieutenant-Governor of Sask. Thomas was a Medical Doctor and practised in Montana and also operated a drug store. Mary Ann (Mrs. Fred. Hagerman) farmed with her husband in Elderslie Twp. and in 1910 moved with their family to Southern Alberta to homestead. William was a Medical Doctor and prac- tised for many years in Ogdensburg N.Y. Elizabeth (Mrs. Robt. Campbell), farmed in Saugeen Twp. Adam died at 3 yrs. of age.
