John Eckford and three children are recorded on the 1851 Census of Bentick Twp. Grey County, but are noted as living in Brant Twp, Bruce County.

John Eckford was by birth a Scotsman. Educated for the ministry at Edinburgh University, he was for twenty-five years a clergyman of the United Presbyterian Church in Scotland. When he in mddle life, with his family, immigrated in the summer of 1851, to Canada. His objective point was some desirable spot in the backwoods. This he found in the woods of Brant where he took up Lots 1 and 2, Concesson 6 and Lot 1, Concexxion 7. His family remained for three months in Durham, while a log shanty was being built. Mr. Eckford was very ready to give his services in the conducting of public worship; there are but few Prebyterian congregations in this part of the country in whch he has not preached. His services were much appreciated and were in great demand to fill any temporary vacancies; many a congragation would have been glad to have him as a settled minister. In 1857 he was elected reeve, but resgned to accept the position of Local Superintendant of Schools, which office he held until it was abolished until 1871. Mr. Eckford also held the office of township treasurer from 1872 until his death, which occured October 22nd, 1881, when he was inhis eighty-second year.
