John's birth or baptism has not been found. He is shown in the 1841 U.K. census, living with his parents, William Clazie and Isabella Purves, at Hutton, Berwickshire. Their 10 children were: Jane, William, Robert, George, John, Isabella, Elisa, another Robert (after the first one died), Charles and Agnes.
John is believed to have crossed the Atlantic - alone, without family - on the ship "England" from Liverpool arriving in New York on May 9th, 1842, the immigration form showed him as "Jno. Clazey, 13, male".destination Canada.
The spelling of the surname changed many times: Claise, Clazie, Clezie, Clezy, Clazy, Clazey, etc. Which only adds to the confusion in following them.
