PASSING OF PIONEER FATHER
Daniel Campbell , an Early Pioneer of Saugeen Answers the Call
Another of our aged residents and an earlier pioneer of Saugeen Tp., passed to his will-earned rest on Thursday morning last in the person of Mr Daniel Campbell, in his 84th year.
Like the majority of the early pioneers, Mr. Campbell was of sturdy physique and suffered very little sickness during his elongated years, it being only recently that he was compelled to take to his bed from a general break-up of the over-wrought system, he gradually sinking in health until Thursday morning when he fell into that long sleep that knows no awakening.
Born in Yorkshire, Scotland , deceased came to Canada whith his parents, the late Mr and Mrs. John Campbell, when eight years of age, and settled near Seaforth. When about eighteen years of age he was employed as a packer with the surveyors who mapped out this village and at the same time received his first and only schooling here. Returing to near Seaforth he took up farming where he met and married Miss Susan Stinson of Clinton. A number of years later they moved to the 2nd of Saugeen where he both farmed and conducted a sawmill. Moving to the 4th of Saugeen he farmed on the lot now occupied by Mr. Albert Upshall until 1910, when he moved to Port Elgin where he lived retired for the remainder of his life.
In politics Mr. Campbell was a staunch Liberal and in religion a devout Presbyterian.
His wife predeceased him about a year and a half ago he leaves to mourn a family of seven sons and two daughters as follows. (Elizabeth) Mrs Geo. Guyer , Bruce Mines , ( Minnie) Mrs Albert Inkster , Underwood. John of Paisley; Andrew, Thomas, George and Dan, all of Disley Sask. and Kenzie at home.

About 1880 they moved to Lot 2 on the 2nd of Saugeen Twp. where he had the 250 acres on both sides of the road. In 1890 he bought 100 acres on Lot 7, Con 4. Around 1892 he bought and moved to Lot 9, Con 4. Within a year of their move they lost their home to fire. They built the present brick house then 35 x28 with a cottage roof. stone cellar, 8 spacious rooms and a 'bathroom'. The house was laid out for the use of a furnace. They also built the present barn that year. The barn was painted with Doyle's Fireproof Cement Paint.
