Descendants of Charles LUCAS (LIVINGSTON) & Mary Ann O'LEARY

Charles LIVINGSTON aka LUCAS was born in Ireland and in 1842 he apparently ran afoul of the law in Liverpool, England, earning himself free transportation to Van Diemen's Land. In 1848 Mary LEARY aka SULLIVAN, born in Ireland, also had a run in with the law and was sentenced to seven years in Van Diemen's Land.
Charles and Mary married in Hobart Town where at least three of thier children were born and in the early 1860's the family relocated to Victoria, Australia. In 1865 they were living in Bullarook, Victoria, Australia.

From the 1800s to the 1853 abolition of penal transportation (known simply as 'transportation'), Van Diemen's Land was the primary penal colony in Australia. Following the suspension of transportation to New South Wales, all transported convicts were sent to Van Diemen's Land. In total, some 75,000 convicts were transported to Van Diemen's Land, or about 40% of all convicts sent to Australia.
