Day 3 & 4; - Ilulissat Ice Fiord
August 19 & 20, 2018

On day three we wake up to Icebergs.

Every day we get into our zodiacs for another adventure.

Most of the Adventure Canada staff doubled as zodiac drivers.

These are the icebergs as they come out of the Ilulissat Icefjord into Disco Bay.

the Ilulissat Icefjord runs west 40 km from the Greenland Ice Sheet to Disco Bay.
At its eastern end is Jacobshaven Isbrea glacier.

This glacier is the most productive glacier in th northern hemisphere. It flows at 20-35 m/day calving off 20 billion tonnes of icebergs per year.

On breaking up the icebergs initially travel north on ocean currents before turning south.

We go around an iceberg and head into the harbour at Ilulissat, Greenland.

Sailboats from all over the world ... note Dutch flag on blue hull boat.

Local soccer field ... not a lot of grass.

We walk through town and come to this board walk that leads to the fjord.
The Ilulissat Fjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

This ice was apparently moving toward the bay but no movement was discernable.
The following picture was taken from the same spot the next day.

The large berg that was in the foreground yesterday is now at the extreme right.

Signs warned not to go down to the beach. An iceberg could calve off and create a sunami. This happened several years ago drowning campers sleeping in a tent on the beach.

Hardy mushrooms

The next day we take another zodiac cruise out to the end of the fjord..

Local fishermen bringing in their catch .. some type of flatfish.

Whales surfacing etween the bergs.

Back to the ship anchored in Disco Bay.

WE sail north along the path of the icebergs.

This berg was quite a distance away. I have no idea how big it must have been.

End of day four, more icebergs as evening sets in. Sunset was about 11 pm.

move on to Day Five
