Stien worked for her father delivering milk door to door as a teenager in Schoorl. After her marriage to Jan van der PLAS they continued to operate the Melkhandel until their relocation to Canada in 1949. Stien worked at the Paisley Creamery grading eggs until 1958 when they purchased the 5c - $1.00 Store in Paisley from Wally Gregg. Stien operated this store until they retired in 1978.

John was born on June 22, 1912 in Bergen, , Noord-Holland, Netherlands, died on July 31, 1989 in Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada aged 77, and was buried in Starkvale Cemetery Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada. He was usually called John.
After their marriage in 1942 Jan & Stien operated a Melkhandel in Schoorl. In 1949 they emigrated to Canada where John worked at the Paisley Creamery, owned by Stien's brother Peter Cutter. In 1958 John & Stien bought the Vanderplas 5c to $1.00. They sold the store to Ron and Vicki ABBS in 1978 and retired to a new home in the north end of Paisley.
