Peter met Claire Dijkstra, married her on February 23, 1939 and immigrated to Canada in 1947. They had seven children, four boys born in Holland and 3 girls, born in Canada. Peter and Claire spent the war years in Holland, growing food for their family and for relatives who lived in Amsterdam. Peter often rode to Amsterdam on a bicycle, with food for his in-laws, and released a homing pigeon to let Claire know he had arrived safely.
Peter was always passionate about playing chess, and had two good chess games with his friend Wally in Abbotsford, a few days before he passed away. Peter was an avid gardener and supplied his family, and many community members with vegetables. His carrots were legendary and many people benefitted from his garden. Peter loved music and played the organ for his family, and for church services for many years. Peter worked for the CN railway until he was 65 and for Northwood, part time for an additional five years. He stayed in Houston until 1998 and then moved to a home in Abbotsford.
Peter is predeceased by his wife Claire, sisters Grace and Betty, brothers John and Jim, brothers in law Tom Esselink, John Mulder, Henry Wiens, Dick Bouma and Bob Matthews. He will be fondly remembered by his children (Norman, Harry, John, Jerry, Joann, Olinda, Dorothy) and their spouses, by his brothers (Bill and Neil) and their spouses, his sisters (Nellie and Evelyn), his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bill was born August 10th, 1929, in Andyk,The Netherlands, to Nanne and Anna Vriend. He was the third youngest of their 11 children. The family emigrated to Canada in 1939, travelling on the good ship Volendaam on which Bill celebrated his 10th birthday. Upon arrival in Houston, BC they began the family farm that Bill worked with his father. Bill married his first wife Margaret in 1952, and they shortly took over ownership of the land; the vegetable and seed farm became a dairy operation that supported a family eventually including seven children. Bill loved to be outside working the ground and growing his own food. His father Nanne had developed the Houston Evergreen Cabbage that was listed in William Dam Seeds Catalogue. In the 1970s, Bill sold the dairy cows and quota, and returned to growing plants, swiftly building a successful nursery business. In 1985, the family sold their place in Houston and moved to the more favorable climate of Abbotsford, BC; the move did not save the marriage, and Bill and Margaret divorced a few years later.
While gardening for Jack Glazema, Bill met Jack's housekeeper, Tienie Kornelius. They were married on November 5th,1993, making their home in Chilliwack, BC, where Bill's love of gardening continued. Many hours were spent working the ground, growing food for his family and friends. He joined Tienie as custodians of Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church where they worked together for 20 years.
Bill and Tienie were blessed to be able to travel to Ghana, Holland, Australia, Mexico and parts of Canada. They enjoyed many opportunities to camp with family and friends. Throughout the years Bill lived out his faith as an active member in his church communities. Music was an important part of worship for Bill, he participated for many years singing in various choirs and on the church Praise Team.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Tienie; his children and grandchildren, Alan, Joyce (Ben, Charles & Kirsten, Carol), Karen & Jack (Daniel, Rachel & Ricki, Tamarah), Edith and Stan; his step-children, Brenda & Rob (Aaron, Joel, Jared, Leah), Linda & Stephen (Matthew, Emily [Haley], Nicole), and Jody & Uriel (Jonathan); his sister Evelyn Bouma, brother Neil & Winnie Vriend, and sister-in-law Rita and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Nanne & Anna, his 2 sons Calvin and Clifford and eight of his siblings.

Jacob "Jim" Vriend passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord on July 25, 2007 with his family by his side. Left to grieve is his wife of 52 years, Rita Vriend. His children, Brenda (Larry) Schroeder, Marvin Vriend, Don and Tammy Vriend, Lori (Greg) Lambert. His grandchildren, Cheryl and Julie Schroeder, Rachel and Avonlea Vriend (Mary Anne Vriend), Paige and Jacob Vriend, Lisa, Steven and Curtis Lambert.
Jim was born in Andijk, Holland and moved with his family to Houston, B.C. when he was four years old. Jim worked in the logging industry while he was in Houston, first in the bush and then later in the mill. He moved his family to Abbotsford, B.C. in 1970 and worked as a millwright at Ritchie-Smith for over 20 years. He retired from there when he was 58 years old. After he retired he started driving as a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society and that turned into co-ordinating all the drivers for the Abbotsford area. He worked at that for over 10 years but had to finally give up this work he greatly enjoyed due to his health.
Jim lived for his family and was very proud of them all.

Pieter Gutter left home for Canada in 1928 at age 17. He worked on a farm for the Switzer family near Kitchener, Ontario and then on to Guelph Agricultural College for a degree in the Dairy feild. he worked in Walkerton, Ontario where he met and married Jean BELL. They lived for a while in Dundalk where Pete managed the Creamery and then on to Paisley, Ontario where they purchased the Paisley Creamery.In the late fifties Peter was a partner in the 4-Way Milk Plant in Tara which he sold and moved to Wingham managing the Creamery there. Jean died in Wingham and Peter relocated to St. Mary's Ontario. Eventually he moved to port Elgin where he was a Real Estate salesman for many years before his retirement.

Stien (Aldert's sister) remembers during the war Aldert and Toni lived in Lieden, Suid Holland and he came to Schoorl on a bicycle with no tires. Food was very scare and as a treat Stien boiled eggs for their meal. Aldert wrapped his up in his handkerchief to take back home to his family.

Stien worked at the Paisley Creamery grading eggs until 1958 when they purchased the 5c - $1.00 Store in Paisley from Wally Gregg. Stien operated this store until they retired in 1978.
