John immigrated in 1950 at the age of twelve with his family soon after World War II to Canada where the family settled on a farm near Chatham, Ontario. After only two years of school in Canada, John started helping on the farm and took on various other jobs. John met the love of his life, Coby in 1956 and they married in 1959. When he was about twenty years old, he started a construction company with his father-in-law that he ran for twenty years. Due to economic difficulties John and the family moved to Taber to make new beginnings and worked for T&K Cabinets for one year. He then ventured into a construction company with his son Clarence for the next thirty years until John's health started to decline. John had a love for working with his hands, building and woodworking all types of different projects.

Stien (Aldert's sister) remembers during the war Aldert and Toni lived in Lieden, Suid Holland and he came to Schoorl on a bicycle with no tires. Food was very scare and as a treat Stien boiled eggs for their meal. Aldert wrapped his up in his handkerchief to take back home to his family.

Stien worked for her father delivering milk door to door as a teenager in Schoorl. After her marriage to Jan van der PLAS they continued to operate the Melkhandel until their relocation to Canada in 1949. Stien worked at the Paisley Creamery grading eggs until 1958 when they purchased the 5c - $1.00 Store in Paisley from Wally Gregg. Stien operated this store until they retired in 1978.
Stien married Jan Cornelis "John" van der PLAS, son of Cornelis Jan "Cor" van der PLAS and Jansje Jeanette DEKKER, on September 22, 1942 in Bergen, , Noord-Holland, Netherlands. John was born on June 22, 1912 in Bergen, , Noord-Holland, Netherlands, died on July 31, 1989 in Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada at age 77, and was buried in Starkvale Cemetery Paisley, Bruce Co, Ontario, Canada. He was usually called John.
After their marriage in 1942 Jan & Stien operated a Melkhandel in Schoorl. In 1949 they emigrated to Canada where John worked at the Paisley Creamery, owned by Stien's brother Peter Cutter. In 1958 John & Stien bought the Vanderplas 5c to $1.00. They sold the store to Ron and Vicki ABBS in 1978 and retired to a new home in the north end of Paisley.
