Cor Wijker: storyteller in wood

In the course of the centuries Egmond therefore supplied relatively few prominent figures, in our time one of the inhabitants is well on the way to becoming a well-known figure in the country. It is a wonderful, but fairly common phenomenon that one finds talents in isolation, in solitude, which, because of their good, now and then masterful qualities, should be counted among the artists. Such a person is Egmonder Cor Wijker.

During the day you can find him in the drawing room of the Town Hall, but in the evening he crawls into his 'barn', as he calls his studio, which is built behind his house in the Prins Hendrikstraat. We visited him in that "shed". As easily as he handles the chisels and gouges, Cor Wijker expresses himself so difficult. Slow are the gestures with which he clarifies his words. Cor Wijker comes from a family of industrious craftsmen, who mainly focused on building "bomb" ships. We often see that several generations of "craft" formed the basis for a special talent.

In his youth he was apprenticed to a master carpenter for about three years and that is his entire "training." He has learned everything in practice. Once while repairing work in a church, he was struck by the beauty of some religious scenes. That was the spark that led him to start expressing his own feelings. He chose material that he dealt with on a daily basis and of which he knew the properties, the peculiarities and the possibilities. He started carving and carving figures, groups, representations from Biblical history.

No sane person will want to or be able to deny the fact that a serious blurring of the Bible has occurred. The Book of Books no longer lives among the people; it has only become the property of a few groups and neither in everyday life nor in art does one adjust to understand the biblical story. If you visit exhibitions of paintings or sculpture, you will find very few works based on the Bible story.

The exhibition in the "Prinsenhof" in Delft showed us what it was like in earlier centuries, where this summer "Prisma der Biblical Art" attracted and... affected thousands of visitors. Cor Wijker's work shows us how it is still possible today.

In a tenacious struggle with matter, without any knowledge of the technique of sculpting, he has found a mode of expression which now amazes the layman and the expert. The strange thing is that Cor Wijker does very little when it comes to drawing. I don't start until I see the entire performance down to the smallest detail in the plane of the shelf," he says. He largely borrows these representations from the Bible. Sometimes a sermon or a Bible reading does not let him go and then the image slowly grows, which he starts carving in wood in his spare time.

We have seen several pieces of his work; not everything stayed at his home, but luckily most of the pieces were photographed.
Most of the topics are taken from the New Testament such as: the Nativity, the Expulsion from the Temple, Let the children come to Me, the Baptism in the Jordan, Gethsemane, Calvary, the Descent from the Cross and the Resurrection.
Above the fireplace hangs one of the first works, Abraham's sacrifice. Resigned is the hand with which Abraham holds Isaac, determined that clutches the knife. The "Last Judgment" shows us how on the right of Christ the elect ascend to heaven, while on the left the damned fall.

Although the whole is reminiscent of our 'primitive' painting, we are dealing here with our own vision. The figures that Cor Wijker carved as a representation of the 'Flood' are of agitated mobility. He does not place images in space, so he does not evoke figures. His work remains bound to the 'frame' of the block or plank into which he cuts. It awakens the memory of the graphics in record records and has the descriptiveness of graphic work.

The material he works with is very different; he doesn't get his blocks sent home to size, but he uses oak from the demolition, or heads from old poles, the trunk of a walnut tree or a piece that washed ashore along the Egmond beach.

His work could be divided into low-relief, where the figures remain fixed to the background, and high-relief, where the figures detach from the background and the depth effect often reveals their full beauty. Most of his works are in high relief. Some of the heads are reminiscent of paintings by early Italian masters, while other work is related to carvings from Oberammergau.

His work has also been seen as an expression of folk art. In our view, this is debatable, because it lacks the most typical characteristics of folk art. It has not grown out of tradition, nor is it impersonal. On the other hand, you see the hand of an individual artist, whom you can best characterize as a natural talent, who intuitively knows where his possibilities lie and how far his limits extend.

Cor Wijker's work is not adoring or adoring, it distances itself, it sets before eyes. It is Calvinistic: tough and serious. It lacks anything that hints of mysticism, because in style and conception it bears witness to a sense of reality and as such it is also typically Dutch in nature. His images have the character of a sermon, not of worship.

Not all his work is taken from the Bible. There are also pieces that depict a current event, such as the stranding of 'De Drente' (on October 20, 1935). This relief already shows us the lively activity and effort involved in the rescue work. We see the lifeboat trying to get to the scene and all the hassle ashore, while a roaring sea and a strong wind are convincingly suggested. But what is most striking is the witty observation of the busy people and it certainly takes a strong talent to be able to hit these things in this way.

When HM Queen Juliana visited the Wieringermeer this summer, Cor Wijker offered Her Majesty one of his works: a mermaid rising from the sea, carrying a shell with a corn reaper in her hands. In the background we see church towers of the Wieringermeer and a fishing vessel at sea. This current piece was based on the text from Genesis I verse 26.

Perhaps this or that reader thinks that this Egmond sculptor earns quite a bit in this way. This is not the case. Cor Wijker does not sell a single piece. It remains with him amateurism and leisure.

Discovered by accident It is strange that this more than sixty-year-old municipal official has remained undiscovered for years. Jan Engelman, the poet-critic, accidentally ended up with him in 1938. In 'De Tijd' he wrote about Cor Wijker as 'a remarkable woodcarver'.

Kasper Niehaus devoted a study to him (in 1948) in the 'Maandblad voor Beeldende Kunsten'. A year later, the journalist Ab van Roon persuaded him to make his work public. This happened in 'Art of our time' in The Hague with about thirty reliefs. Press and public were delighted with the beautiful work of this silent worker.

After his work has been publicized (even on television), assignments have also been made. He declines most of them, for he is a "Sunday sculptor." "When you are economically dependent on this work," he says, "you are tempted to make things that are not entirely justified." You cannot do that when you have set yourself the task of being a servant of the Word, for that is what he is in all his conduct.

There is a small Reformed church in Egmond, it is an ugly whitewashed case on a hill. It contains... a beautiful pulpit and baptismal font by Cor Wijker, who are, as it were, the precursors of a renewed Protestant, ecclesiastical sculpture. It is a remarkable and gratifying event that the simple people in Egmond have shown understanding for the fact that the Word can be proclaimed not only through the mouth, but also through the image. In four panels Cor Wijker cut The Resurrection, Golgotha, the Ascension and the Outbreak of the Holy Spirit. On the corners of the pulpit he carved stuffed ears of corn and bunches of grapes as symbols of bread and wine.

The last largest work by this Egmond sculptor can be seen in the new Maranatha Church in Amsterdam-Noord. In that place of worship, too, the pulpit was circumcised by him with biblical motifs.

We are happy to have made the acquaintance of this special Egmonder. His art is honest and simple. It typifies Cor Wijker when he says that, when people insisted on exhibiting, he first talked to the pastor about it "whether he was allowed to do that." He replied: "As I preach the Gospel by the Word, you do it with the chisels in wood."

We are very pleased that, in this contribution, we were able to tell the readers of 'de Speelwagen' something about this quiet Noordhollander. If you want to see his art: You are always welcome. The address? Cor Wijker, sculptor, Egmond aan Zee.
That "says" everything.
