ON TUESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 14, 1950, THE STUDENT BODY OF THE PAISLEY CONTINUATION SCHOOL WAS TREATED TO A CHICKEN DINNER BY THE PRINCIPAL, MR. J, B. VASEY, AND THE SCHOOL BOARD. THE DINNER WAS HELD AT THE GRAND CENTRAL HOTEL.
THE BANQUET WAS IN HONOUR OF THE COMPETITORS WHO HAD WORKED SO HARD TO BRING BACK TO PAISLEY THE BIG INTER SCHOOL TROPHY FROM THE FIELD MEET AT TEESWATER. MANY OF THE SAME COMPETITORS HAD WON PRIZES AT THE INVITATION GAMES AT OWEN SOUND, WHERE ATHLETES FROM SCHOOLS OF ALL THIS WESTERN PART OF ONTARIO, HAD COMPETED AGAINST EACH OTHER. THERE, OUR SCHOOL WON SECOND PLACE STANDING FOR THE SCHWAN MEMORIAL CUP. SEVERAL OF THE BOYS WHO HAD WON HIGH HONOURS AT TEESWATER AND OWEN SOUND, LATER ENTERED THE WESTERN ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOLS' ASSOCIATION MEET AT LONDON. HERE THE BOYS MADE A CREDITABLE SHOWING AGAINST ATHLETES FROM ALL SCHOOLS OF WESTERN ONTARIO, THOUGH NONE OF THE GIRLS WENT TO LONDON, THEY TOO, HAD DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES AT OWEN SOUND BY WINNING SECOND PLACE IN THE RELAY RACE THERE. THE PRINCIPAL AND THE BOARD FELT THAT THE STUDENTS HAD SOME REWARD DUE THEM FOR THIS VERY CREDITABLE SHOWING AT THE DIFFERENT FIELD MEETS.
ABOUT SIXTY PUPILS, THE STAFF, AND THE MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD SAT DOWN TO DINNER. THE BANQUET WAS OPENED WITH A TOAST TO THE KING, FOLLOWED BY A MERRY SING SONG. AFTER THE CROWD HAD DONE HEARTY JUSTICE TO THE MEAL, EDDIE DUDDLE, AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE LITERARY SOCIETY, EXPRESSED HIS APPRECIATION OF THE LOVELY DINNER. MR. MATTHEWS, IN REPLY OFFERED CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ATHLETES, AND SPOKE OF THE BOARD'S PLEASURE IN HELPING TO ARRANGE FOR THE BANQUET. MR. VASEY ALSO CONGRATULATED THE ATHLETES AND SAID HE HOPED THAT PAISLEY MIGHT WIN THE BIG SCHWAN CUP ANOTHER YEAR. THE DINNER CONCLUDED WITH A SING SONG.
IN THE EVENING THE STUDENTS HELD A DANCE IN THE TOWN HALL, TO WHICH THE TEESWATER, THE TIVERTON, AND THE RIPLEY CONTINUATION SCHOOL PUPILS HAD ALL BEEN INVITED, EVERYONE HOPES FOR A SIMILAR BANQUET, AND DANCE NEXT YEAR.
