Day 16, 17 & 18; Bellot Strait to Resolute to
Pond Inlet
August 31, Sept 01 & Sept 02, 2018
Day Sixteen: Today we find out we can not get through the Bellot Strait.
The ice charts show that what we could expect on the west side of
the Bothia Peninsula.
The Louis St-Laurent would only take one ship
at a time and a waiting freighter had priority.
We turn north and follow the Henry Larson icebreaker back up the King
Regent Inlet.
The plan is to make our way to Resolute and fly out
from there.
We pass King Leopold Island in the distance.
Once back in open water we take advantage of the weather to take a group picture.
We try to stop at Beechey Island again but the ice is still surrounds the island.
A special dessert tonight - Chocolate Madness
Some spectacular colours as we approach Resolute.
Day Seventeen; early morning, the icebreaker can not find a path into Resolute.
The plan changes and we follow the Henry Larson east on Lancaster Sound to Arctic Bay.
The icebreaker reports that the harbour at Actic Bay is also choked with ice and we have to follow her to Pond Inlet.
Day Eighteen; the Henry Larson and Ocean Endeavor arrive in Pond Inlet.
One last zodiac ride.
At the Pond Inlet airport we greet the incoming passengers from Edmonton, who have had an unexpected overnight stay in Yellowknife.
We board four smaller planes for Yellowknife where we will board our flight to Edmonton.
We make a refueling stop at Pelly Bay.
We leave Yellowknife about midnight and are sent off with spectacular Northern Lights.
