In 1958 John & Stien bought the Vanderplas 5c to $1.00. They sold the store to Ron and Vicki ABBS in 1978 and retired to a new home in the north end of Paisley.

After her marriage to Jan van der PLAS they continued to operate the Melkhandel until their relocation to Canada in 1949. Stien worked at the Paisley Creamery grading eggs until 1958 when they purchased the 5c - $1.00 Store in Paisley from Wally Gregg. Stien operated this store until they retired in 1978.

Jan immigrated to Australia with his wife Jeanne and three children in 1951 after serving for 12 years in The Royal Dutch Navy. . They left Amsterdam, Netherlands February 23, 1951 on board the Groote Beer, arriving in Freemantle, Western Australia March 21, 1951. His Parents were shop owners , Jan followed the family tradition by buying a shop in Onslow Road Shenton Park Perth with a home,, And living there for about 14 years, .His second shop was in Gregory street Wembley,. Then They decided to try owning a Guest house in Geraldton West Australia a country wheat town by the ocean, and enjoyed cooking and caring for holiday makers for about 7 years. and then both in 1970 traveled to Queensland liked it and in Surfers Paradise bought a home and contential delicatessen shop one of 3 they owned. in 1978 they returned to Perth and retired.Jan was always sociable and polite always the gentleman. In his spare time he loved soccer and fishing.

John Zwakman, 76, of New Ulm died Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the Immanuel-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Mankato.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2005 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with Pastor Robert Fuller officiating.
Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Cottage Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marilyn of New Ulm; daughters, Jayne Zwakman of St. Paul Park and Amy Tjernagel and her husband, Jeffrey of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Del and Georgie Zwakman, Daniel and Marla Zwakman all of Cottage Grove, and Robb Zwakman of New Ulm; grandchildren, Schon, Dereck, Dawn, Jessica, and Matthew; great granddaughter, Alexzandra; a sister, Shirley Maag of Westminster, CA; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers, Clarence and Gary Zwakman.
John Martin Zwakman was born on May 27, 1929 in Superior, Wisconsin to Martin and Elizabeth (Feyma) Zwakman. He graduated from Superior High School and then the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a degree in business. On June 6, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Burgraff in Pine City. He enlisted in the US Army, serving in the Korean War and was awarded two bronze stars. He was a founder of the Cottage Grove VFW, Post #8752.
John married Marilyn Eleanor BURGRAFF, daughter of Edward BURGRAFF and Eleanor RYAN.
